We are grateful for Jo stepping in at the last moment to do our demonstration this evening.
She did a subject which she doesn't do so often - a seascape in a sunset from a photo which she had taken on holiday in Guernsey. She said that whenever she paints, she prefers to work from subjects she has seen and experienced, she doesn't like painting from photos when she hasn't seen the subject in real life.
For this demo, she used a photo she had taken whilst on holiday. As you will see from the photo of the finished painting, the sky was quite dark, with light shining through, and she painted the sky first, ensuring that the 'white' of the sun in the clouds was left as white paper, even though she was using Acrylics.
Once she had painted the sky, using card to ensure a good straight edge for the horizon (a useful tip to remember), she painted the silhouette of the land in the mid distance, then the foreground. She intentionally left the foreground without too much detail as that didn't want to distract from the main focus of the picture, which was the light in the center of the picture.
She talked about not over doing the picture - of not trying to add too much in, as that would spoil the picture.
We enjoyed having Jo once again, and for the new subject which she painted for us. |
